Why am I not winning the Amazon Buy Box with the lowest price?

A cheaper item is only one part of the offer. Here is what UK sellers should compare, what changed in July 2026, and what to check before lowering a price again.

Buy Box and repricing Updated Eve SellerOps

The short answer

The lowest item price does not guarantee Amazon's Buy Box, now called the Featured Offer. Amazon also considers delivery and performance. Compare the customer's total price, then check the offer itself before cutting another penny.

What changed for UK sellers in July 2026?

Amazon announced the removal of its separate seller eligibility step for the UK and EU from 20 July 2026. That step previously screened sellers using performance criteria before their offers were compared. Amazon says the change requires no seller action.

The announcement explicitly leaves offer selection unchanged: competitive pricing, delivery speed and performance still matter. Read Amazon's UK and EU announcement.

Being considered does not mean being selected. Older advice about qualifying as a seller can describe the previous process. The July change does not make the cheapest offer an automatic winner, or remove the need to investigate a problem with a particular listing.

Are you actually the cheapest comparable offer?

Start with an ordinary comparison, before trying to reverse-engineer Amazon. Fix the marketplace, delivery postcode, product variation, condition and quantity. Record both sellers' item price, shipping charge and displayed delivery promise at the same time.

Customer seesYour offerOther offer
Item price£18.99£20.49
Delivery charge£2.99£0.00
Total price£21.98£20.49
Displayed arrivalIn four daysTomorrow

In this invented example, your item price is £1.50 lower, but the customer pays £1.49 more and waits longer. Cutting the item price by 1p leaves both disadvantages almost unchanged. This illustrates a comparison mistake; it does not predict which offer Amazon will feature.

Amazon's public guide says to include shipping in price comparisons and favours fast delivery with a dependable arrival window. It also says fulfilling orders yourself can be as effective as using Amazon's fulfilment network. Amazon's Featured Offer guide.

What to check before lowering your price

Use this sequence to build a record for one affected SKU. It is a troubleshooting workflow, not a list of Amazon's ranking weights.

  1. Separate losing the offer from having no featured offer. Note whether another seller has the purchase button or the page asks the customer to see buying options. Save the ASIN, time and delivery postcode with your observation.
  2. Read Pricing Health. Amazon points sellers there to review offers that cannot currently be featured. Check the reference prices shown, including any competitive external price. Being cheapest on Amazon alone does not settle that comparison.
  3. Confirm stock is buyable. Check the listing's current status and available quantity. Units you intend to send to Amazon are not evidence that a customer can order them today.
  4. Check the delivery promise. For merchant-fulfilled stock, compare the displayed arrival with your handling time and shipping setup. Change a promise only if your operation can meet it.
  5. Review order problems. Inspect Account Health and recent customer issues. Correct the underlying fulfilment or product problem before using a lower price as the response to every lost sale.
  6. Check the submitted price. Compare your intended price with what is actually visible. If a repricer is involved, read its latest decision and submission result before changing the strategy again.

Amazon lists unavailable stock and pricing issues among the reasons an offer may not be featured. Its guide also directs sellers to Account Health for customer-service metrics. See Amazon's checks and explanation.

If the figures still disagree, open a Seller Support case with the comparison you recorded and the exact message shown in Seller Central. A specific example gives support something to investigate. Repeatedly changing the price while collecting evidence makes the original problem harder to reproduce.

Set a price limit you can afford

Write down the amount you want to retain per sale after your chosen costs. Include stock, prep and inbound costs, Amazon fees and the VAT treatment relevant to your business. Allow for storage, returns, advertising and overheads where applicable. Make the exclusions explicit so you do not mistake a partial contribution figure for net profit.

Then compare candidate prices in the UK FBA calculator. Check the whole intended price range: our guide to FBA fee thresholds explains why a higher selling price can sometimes leave less contribution per unit.

A price floor is your business decision. If the competitive price is below what you can accept, choose deliberately whether to hold stock, change the buying economics or run a controlled clearance. Losing margin by accident is not a useful measure of repricing success.

Where Eve helps

Eve Repricing reads Buy Box and competitor offer data, works within your configured minimum and maximum, and records the reason behind its decisions. Use the decision log to understand a price change or a decision to hold. Keep product costs current in Catalogue when reviewing those limits.

Eve's log explains Eve's decisions. It does not reveal Amazon's internal selection reasoning or guarantee a Featured Offer placement. Review the marketplace evidence alongside the log.

Common questions

Does the cheapest price always win the Buy Box?

No. Amazon considers competitive pricing alongside delivery speed and performance. Compare the total customer price, including delivery, rather than the item price alone.

Did the July 2026 change remove performance from selection?

No. Amazon's UK and EU announcement removes the separate seller eligibility step from 20 July 2026. It says offer selection still considers competitive pricing, delivery speed and performance.

Should I lower my price by another penny?

First check the total price, delivery promise, stock and any Pricing Health message. A further reduction may not address the problem. Calculate the contribution at the proposed price before changing your limits.

Can Eve guarantee that I win the Featured Offer?

No. Eve manages prices within your configured limits and records its decisions. Amazon selects the Featured Offer; Eve cannot guarantee placement or expose Amazon's internal selection reasoning.
